Optical Scores

status: development phase

Optical scores focuses on repurposing electromagnetic field inductors as musical interfaces: capturing invisible electromagnetic landscapes and making them audible through induction and digital signal processing techniques, like resonators and neural audio synthesis. Inspired by a sustainable instrument design approach, optical scores are made using obsolete electronic components and circuit boards of discarded electronic devices — rendering inaudible wavescapes, latent data structures, and model behaviours in physical, performative ways.

The project has been presented in solo performances and artistic collaborations (Árni Valur, Nicola Privato, Miguel Angel Crozzoli, Gon Muruaga). Future collaborations include compositions and performances with Þóranna Björnsdóttir and Áki Ásgeirsson. Optical scores design and development is supported by the Intelligent Instruments Lab and Raflost festival in Iceland. The project has been granted funding by the Nordic Culture Point (Culture and Art Programme) for further development and dissemination.

Optical Scores has received funding from the Culture and Art Programme financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers.
